India's interior minister tests positive for coronavirus, hospitalised

Amit shah requests those who came in contact with him in the last few days to isolate themselves

India’s Interior Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that he had tested positive for coronavirus and had been admitted to hospital.

Amit Shah, a close aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and one of the country’s most powerful politicians, heads a key ministry that has been at the forefront of managing India’s coronavirus outbreak.

“I request all of you who came in contact with me in the last few days to isolate yourselves and get tested,” Shah said in a tweet.

India on Saturday recorded over 57,000 more cases of the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, raising the overall infection tally to nearly 1.7 million.

According to the Health Ministry, the total number of Covid-19 cases in India climbed to 1,695,988, including 764 who had died of the disease over the last day.

Figures from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) revealed that 525,689 tests had been conducted to identify infections.
