Christopher Nolan, a name that surpasses many in Hollywood and enjoys much the same stature as Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick back in the days, celebrated his 50th birthday on July 30.

While we maybe a couple of days late to the party, it’s never too late for a Nolan marathon. With hugely popular and successful films like Inception under his belt, Nolan is rightfully regarded as one of the finest filmmakers today.

To celebrate a belated Nolan day, we’ve compiled five of the ace director’s films from The Indian Express that you can watch over the long weekend!

Batman Begins (2005)

Of course, you cannot have a Nolan list without his take on the caped crusader’s tale. Starring Christian Bale as Batman, the film garnered him rave reviews and many critics even termed is as perhaps, the most thorough film ever made about Batman’s origin.

It also kicked off the Dark Knight trilogy, which is one of the most successful superhero franchises in Hollywood. If you’re into the DC superhero, chances are you already know this one by heart, but if you’ve recently gotten into the comics, this is one take that you don’t want to miss out on.

The Prestige (2006)

This 2006 thriller from Nolan is an intriguing tale of obsession and deception. Starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman in starring roles as two rival illusionists, this film hits it right on the head as a mind-boggling thriller.

Legendary musician David Bowie also stars as Nikola Tesla in the film, helping to weave the intricate plot even deeper. This one’s a must-watch if you need some mind-bending thriller on your list.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Nolan’s version of the inimitable nemesis of Batman, Joker, helped to make the character even more timeless than it already was – his direction of Heath Ledger as the Joker earned Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his chilling performance.

As if you need any more convincing that this may just be one of Nolan’s finest work, the New York Times had this to say about the film: “Pitched at the divide between art and industry, poetry and entertainment, The Dark Knight goes darker and deeper than any Hollywood movie of its comic-book kind.”

Inception (2010)

Let’s be honest, when this film came out, the majority of were left scratching our heads. What makes this such a stellar film? It’s simple: it pushed the boundaries of our minds and as Rolling Stone put it, “Inception rewards the attention it demands.”

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who steals information by penetrating the subconscious of his victims, this Nolan directorial will make you wary of your own dreams and you might even lose some sleep over it, but trust us, it will be worth it!

Interstellar (2014)

Starring Matthew McConaughey in the lead role, Interstellar is Nolan’s science-fiction epic about a future in which the Earth is dying and he must find a new planet that could be habitable for humanity.

Set in 2067, this film will soar you through space, and land you back home in a daze. According to Variety, Interstellar is as visually and conceptually audacious as anything Nolan has yet done.” Some also consider one of the more personal Nolan films.
