Residents of the Mirali and Haiderkhel tehsils of North Waziristan tribal district on Thursday celebrated Eidul Azha after local witnesses claimed that they had sighted the moon 10 days ago. The witnesses stated that they had conveyed their testimonies to the regional Ruet-e-Hilal Committee (moonsighting committee) of the Qasim Ali Khan Mosque in the provincial capital. However, the regional committee led by cleric Shahabuddin Popalzai did not attach sufficient weight to the testimonies. The local administration also met with religious scholars and clerics from these tehsils to convince them on observing Eid with the rest of the country, but their efforts were in vain and Eid was observed in the area on Thursday. The remaining tehsils of North Waziristan district are expected to celebrate Eid with the rest of the country.
