In a heinous incident of animal cruelty, a 40-year-old man allegedly sodomised a female stray dog in Maharashtra’s Thane.

The incident took place on a foot over-bridge at Wagle Estate at around 4:30 pm on Tuesday. The accused has been arrested, following a complaint by Aditi Nair, an animal rights activist.

According to the police, the accused resides in Wagle Estate’s Road number 16. He makes a living by doing a number of odd jobs including manual scavenging. On Tuesday, a few boys, who regularly provide food to stray canines in the area, spotted the accused sexually abusing the female dog on the foot over-bridge. They immediately informed Nair about the heinous crime. Subsequently, Nair reported the crime to the local police.

Nair said that police were initially “reluctant” to lodge a case against the accused, following which she approached Thane Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar. “He (Phansalkar) strictly told the concerned police to immediately act and make an airtight case,” The Times of India quoted the animal rights activist as saying.

On Wednesday, police registered an offence under IPC Section 377 (unnatural sex) and Section 11(a) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The accused was picked up by the Wagle estate’s Srinagar Police. ACP Prakash Nilewad said that a sincere investigation is being conducted into the case.

In another incident, a 55-year-old man was arrested for allegedly “raping” a cow in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal on July 5. The accused went in a dairy in the city’s Sundar Nagar locality and allegedly sexually abused the hapless animal. Police arrested him after examining CCTV footage.
