RAWALPINDI:

Work on the long-delayed Ghazi-Barotha water supply project for the parched twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi could begin soon after Eidul Azha when the Punjab government is expected to release the necessary funds. This was disclosed by the Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Narcotics Control Sheikh Rashid Shafique on Wednesday. “Punjab government has allocated Rs3.2 billion to start the project that will supply 200 million gallons per day (MGD) water to the twin cities,” he said while talking to The Express Tribune. Shafique said that the money will also be utilised for acquiring land to lay a 60-kilometre long pipeline from the Ghazi-Barotha Dam to the Sangjiani water treatment plant. Demarcation for land required for the project has already been completed, he said, adding that the government will affix a price for the land in consultation with landowners. Under the project, two pipelines, each 80-inches wide, will be laid along both sides of the Ghazi-Barotha stream.
