RAWALPINDI:

After a flour crisis, the sugar crisis is looming over the heads of the Rawalpindi locals. The price of one kilogramme (kg) sugar has increased to Rs86 from Rs80 in the garrison city. The representative body of grocers, Rawalpindi Karyana and General Stores Association (RKGSA), has also hinted at jacking up the price of the essential commodity. Currently, the wholesale price of sugar stands at Rs83 per kg, and it was selling in the market at a retail price of Rs85-86. RKGSA President Saleem Pervaiz said that the sugar was only available from one sugar mill and it has vanished from everywhere. He suspected that if the situation continues, the price of a 50 kg sugar bag would escalate over Rs4,200. The official said that the administration was pressurising them to sell the commodity at Rs70 per kg while they were getting it Rs83 wholesale rate.
