PESHAWAR:

To combat corruption, the provincial government has decided to frame new laws to further strengthen and streamline its anti-corruption watchdog.

This was decided in a meeting on Monday with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan in the chair. Various matters relating to the strengthening of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) were discussed. The existing legal framework, mandate, performance and administrative structure of ACE were reviewed.

It was decided that ACE’s administrative setup will be restructured along modern lines and further strengthened.

It was further decided that sleuths for the establishment will be hired permanently to strengthen the investigation side of the ACE, particularly for probing white-collar crimes.

The chief minister said accountability, merit and transparency are the top-most priories of his government.

ACE, he said, will be strengthened and fully empowered to eliminate corruption. The chief minister directed that no provision should be incorporated in the new legislation which allows for plea bargaining. Moreover, realistic timelines should be prescribed in the new rules for the timely disposal of inquiries and complaints, he added.
