LAHORE:

A woman lawmaker from the Pakistan Tenreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called for registration of a treason case against senior politician Javed Hashmi, accusing him of trying to tarnish the image of the country's institutions and inciting the people against them.

The demand was put forward by PTI MPA Musarat Jamshed Cheema in a resolution submitted to the Punjab Assembly Secretariat.

The provincial assembly member stated in the resolution that remarks made during a recent press conference of Hashmi were tantamount to embarrassing the country's institutions. The political leader had also been found inciting people through his remarks, she alleged.

She said it was an anti-state act and no-one could be allowed to do this. She also said that speaking against state institutions was tantamount to committing the offence of treason.

She demanded the registration of a treason case over the matter.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Cheema alleged that Hashmi had attempted to embarrass and humiliate the state institutions, which, she said, could not be tolerated.

She also appealed to the Supreme Court to take action over the remarks made by the leader while addressing the press conference.
