Prisons to have more literacy centres

RAWALPINDI:

Adiala Jail inmates will have access to better education facilities with increase in the number of Literacy Centres in the prison. Officials said that the Punjab government has decided to increase the number of literacy centres in prisons to provide fast-track primary education to prisoners. The course from pre-nursery to class five is completed in 40 months at these non-formal education facilities. Each jail will have three to five literacy centres. Separate classes will be held for women, children, minors and adults. Officials said the Punjab government has decided to open 12,019 new basic education centres to increase the literacy rate in the province. The provincial government has allocated a budget of Rs1.60 billion to the Literacy Department to increase its outreach for providing primary education.
