ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has directed the regional and district election commissions to find suitable areas to establish their offices with facility of strong rooms to store election material, sources said on Thursday.

At present, the sources said, the ECP has 160 offices across the country but 156 of them were housed in rented places, due to which the commission faced difficulties in storing of election material and accommodating commission’s field staff, besides payment of millions of rupees in rent.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja took notice of the situation that the ECP had only four buildings – its headquarters in Islamabad, offices of two provincial election commissioners and one district election commissioner.

“Now, the ECP has decided to buy plots across the country to establish its own offices,” said a source, adding that the four Provincial Election Commissioners had been directed to purchase plots at suitable places, where strong rooms for storing election materials could be set up.

A letter has been sent by the ECP headquarters to all the provincial election commissioners asked them to find suitable places for the purchase of plots for the regional and district election commission offices after which the plots would be obtained from the provincial governments.
