Amid pandemic: ‘Govt committed to stimulating economy’

Finance adviser tells Chinese envoy of measures taken to mitigate socio-economic impact

ISLAMABAD: The government is taking various initiatives to stimulate the economy in these difficult and uncertain times, said Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on Friday.

In a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing, the adviser discussed several matters of mutual interest.

Shaikh appreciated the continued and unwavering support that China had been providing to Pakistan as a true brother.

Reviewing the serious social and economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic across the globe, he apprised the ambassador of the wide-reaching measures that the government of Pakistan had taken, and was further planning, for the provision of much-needed relief to mitigate the socio-economic impact, especially on the low-income and vulnerable groups.

While discussing progress on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, Shaikh emphasised that CPEC was the culmination and anchor of the great friendship and deep-rooted collaboration between people and governments of China and Pakistan to realise their joint destiny, achieve common objectives and ensure a more prosperous future for both nations.

He said the government of Pakistan was taking several institutional steps to speed up implementation of CPEC projects.

Speaking on the occasion, Yao assured the adviser that China would enhance investment in development projects that would both stimulate the economy and generate employment.
