Tax Collection: Sindh tax department surpasses target

KARACHI: The Sindh Excise and Taxation Department has surpassed its set target of tax collection by 16 per cent and recovered Rs23.4 billion in the financial year 2011. Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation, Mukesh Kumar Chawla in a meeting on Thursday expressed his satisfaction that the department has realised its responsibilities and hoped that it would continue with the trend. Director General Excise and Taxation Shoaib Siddiqui, in a briefing to the minister, said that Rs3.5 billion has been collected as infrastructure duty cess in the form of bank guarantee as per a court order and this amount is included in the collection made during 2010-2011. Siddiqui informed the meeting that Rs3.5 billion were recovered against the set target of Rs2.9 billion for motor-vehicle tax.  However, Rs162.6 million was collected, under the head of cotton fee, against the target of Rs250 million.
