‘Religious intolerance not allowed in society’

Minister vows to crack down controversial material in textbooks

LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Law and Social Welfare Basharat Raja has said that religious hatred, sectarianism and provocation cannot be allowed in the society. “Those who commit acts that hurt religious sentiments of the people do not deserve any concession.”

He expressed these views while presiding over a meeting of Special Committee No 6 of the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday.

The meeting was also attended by Punjab Minister for Schools Education Dr Murad Raas, Punjab Members of Provincial Assembly Mian Shafi, Muhammad Ilyas, Muzaffar Ali Sheikh, Kashif Mahmood and Tahir Khalil Sindhu, Ulema Muttahida Board Chairman Maulana Tahir Ashrafi, law secretary and other officials concerned.

The special committee decided to take stern action against the publication of controversial material in the books of the Punjab Textbook Board.

The provincial minister vowed to crackdown on those responsible for publishing controversial material in textbooks, as well as, enact effective legislation to prevent the publication of such controversial material in the future.
