Mahira Khan wants you to watch this documentary on racism

What's better than turning to films and documentaries to get a better understanding of issues around you

Entertainment Desk June 09, 2020

With protests fuelled by rampant racism in America raging for more than a week now, many people are clamouring to understand the issue more and what's better than turning to films and documentaries about the subject?

Mahira Khan has exactly one such recommendation for her fans to watch on Netflix - the documentary titled 13th.  "The documentary you need to watch right right now - 13th on Netflix. Directed by Ava (DuVernay), thank you for this. Also I believe it’s available on YouTube for free!" she wrote.

The documentary, whose title 13th refers to the 13th Amendment of the American constitution, has been made free to watch by Netflix in the wake of renewed interest in it.  It was earlier released in 2016 and has received major focus following the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests that followed.

The 13th Amendment itself states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States."

And DuVernay's documentary focuses at the false lore that has developed around black criminality, especially in the US - there is a clear disproportionate number of African-Americans living their lives as prisoners, explained The Mirror.

Go get watching if you are looking for a heart-tugging and informative watch!
