Four more K-P lawmakers contract coronavirus

12 members of provincial assembly have so far tested positive for Covid-19

PESHAWAR: Another four lawmakers of the provincial assembly have contracted the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), officials said on Thursday as the province recorded its highest ever single-day infection count of 517 new cases.

The lawmakers who tested positive for the virus include the MPA Zeenat Bibi of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), MPA Jamshid Khan, Awami National Party’s (ANP) MPA Faisal Zeb Khan and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) MPA Salahuddin has been infected with the virus.

So far, 12 members of the K-P Assembly have been infected with coronavirus

Members of the National Assembly from K-P, who have contracted Covid-19 are Gul Zafar Khan from NA-41 Bajaur, MNA Ali Wazir from NA-50 South Waziristan and Mehboob Shah from NA-6 Lower Dir.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl lawmaker in the National Assembly Munir Orakzai who passed away on Tuesday had also recovered from the virus weeks before his death due to heart attack.

Those who have recovered from the Covid-19 include ANP senior leader Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, Mian Iftikhar Hussain and PML-N’s Ameer Muqam.

K-P Assembly MPA Mian Jamsheduddin Kakakhel passed away on Wednesday after contracting the novel coronavirus.

Kakakhel was 65, and was earlier shifted to a hospital in Islamabad after his test for the virus came back positive.

The MPA was elected from the constituency of PK-63, Nowshera-III, on a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ticket during the 2018 elections.

So far, at least 11,890 people have contracted Covid-19 in K-P, including 517 on Thursday alone. There have been a total of 521 associated deaths, including 21 on Thursday. Some 3,221 people have recovered from the virus in the province.

Peshawar, Swat, Malakand and Mardan are the biggest epicentres of the virus and account for half of all Covid-19 cases in the province.
