Locust assault

Letter June 03, 2020
The hard truth is that Pakistan is not stable enough to sustain another crisis, especially that of food insecurity

KARACHI: The recent locust attacks on farms in Pakistan have become a matter of grave concern. These assaults may very easily turn into a serious crisis as these deadly insects have ravaged crops all over the country.

The situation has sparked an uproar in farmers and villagers who remain dejected due to their colossal loss. The fear of an impending state of famine that the country may face, if the problem is not ameliorated soon, is very real. It is extremely surprising that the government is unable to understand the gravity of such a situation and continue to ignore the issue despite alarming reports. These attacks are becoming increasingly intolerable, yet no pragmatic measures are underway except for a few small-scale efforts.

The hard truth is that Pakistan is not stable enough to sustain another crisis, especially that of food insecurity. The authorities concerned should also look into this matter at the earliest. The inability to do so will lead to severe consequences in the future.
