Karachi transporters delay reopening

The decision came after Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani met a delegation of transporters

KARACHI: A day after announcing that transporters would resume intra-city services from Monday, Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI) president Irshad Bukhari postponed the reopening of public transport in the city on Sunday.

The decision came after Karachi commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shallwani met a delegation of transporters earlier in the day.

According to Bukhari, Shallwani said that the KTI had always supported the government and so, the government did not expect that they would violate the law. Upon this, the delegation responded that they too did not expect the government to continue to deprive them of their livelihood after suspending public transport for over two months.

Bukhari said the commissioner assured them that he would arrange a meeting between the transporters and the Sindh chief minister, while recommending that the government permit transport services to resume.
