KARACHI: Sindh reported on Friday the highest number of Covid-19 deaths recorded in a province in the country within a single day thus far.

According to a statement issued by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, 31 more coronavirus-related deaths were recorded in the province on Friday, raising its death toll to 427. This was in addition to the emergence of 804 new coronavirus cases on the day, following which Sindh's virus tally climbed to 26,113, he revealed.

Mourning the loss of lives to the virus, the CM termed the situation in the province "disappointing," with the people failing to cooperate with the government to contain the spread of Covid-19. "We cannot control it from spreading further if we do not adopt precautionary measures," he stressed.

Providing details about the newly-reported cases, the CM said that of the 804 new patients, 597 belonged to Karachi, with 140 from Korangi, 132 from East district, 117 from South district, 79 from Central district, 68 from Malir and 61 from West district.

He further stated that 37 more cases were detected in Hyderabad, 24 in Ghotki, 23 in Larkana, 10 in Jacobabad and as many in Jamshoro, seven each in Shikarpur and Badin, four in Dadu, three in Umerkot, two in Sanghar and one each in Kashmore, Khairpur, Matiari, Shaheed Benazirabad and Tando Allahyar.

On a positive note, he added that among those under treatment, 1,563 had recovered. "This is the highest number of recovered patients in a day, which means that, now, 12,750 patients have been cured in the province," the CM said. "The recovery ratio in Sindh is encouraging and hopefully it will improve further."

This left 12,936 patients under treatment, the CM claimed, adding among them 11,902 were home-isolated, 126 were accommodated in isolation centres and 908 were in hospitals. Of them, 305 were critically ill, including 52 on ventilators, he said.

The CM urged people to be careful, adopt standard operating procedures and avoid crowding.
