Microsoft's Solitaire turns 30 years old

Solitaire is still one of the most played games in the world

Microsoft’s classic card game Solitaire is celebrating its 30^th anniversary today.

The US tech giant marked the special day with a world record attempt at completing most games in one day.

Microsoft Solitaire was initially known as Windows Solitaire and is still one of the most played games in the world with more than 100 million hands played daily around the world, reports The Verge.

Solitaire was originally included as part of Windows 3.0 back in 1990, designed to demonstrate how to use a mouse by grabbing virtual cards and dropping them in place.

This taught users the basics of drag-and-drop in Windows, which we still use today.

The game was initially programmed by Microsoft intern Wes Cherry and the original card deck was designed by pixel art and Mac GUI pioneer Susan Kare.

Solitaire was included in the World Video Game Hall of Fame last year due to its immense popularity. It has been translated into 65 languages for more than 200 markets.

Microsoft Solitaire's new app includes five new game modes, daily challenges, competitive events, Xbox Live integration, and even the ability to choose difficulty level.

Solitaire is now available on Windows, iOS, Android as well as on web.
