High mortality rate recorded in Covid-19 patients put on ventilators

Only two out of 16 coronavirus patients put on ventilators recovered in Karachi's Dow Hospital

KARACHI: The Sindh health department has revealed in one of its report that the mortality rate is very high among the hospitalised Covid-19 patients requiring ventilators in Pakistan as well as across the world.

According to the report published on May 17, out of 134 coronavirus patients put on ventilators, 115 had succumbed to the deadly disease in Punjab.

Likewise in Karachi's Dow University Hospital, among 16 virus infected patients placed on ventilators, only two had recuperated from the mysterious disease originated in China.

According to the report, of the total 22 Covid-19 patients put on ventilators at PIMS hospital in Islamabad, 14 died of the deadly disease.

In other countries like China, UK and the US, 90 per cent mortality rate has been observed in the Covid-19 patients placed on ventilators, said the report a copy of which is available to The Express Tribune.





Reuters earlier in April interviewed 30 doctors and medical professionals in countries including China, Italy, Spain, Germany and the United States, who have experience of dealing with Covid-19 patients.

Nearly all agreed that ventilators are vitally important and have helped save lives. At the same time, many highlighted the risks from using the most invasive types of them - mechanical ventilators - too early or too frequently, or from non-specialists using them without proper training in overwhelmed hospitals.

Medical procedures have evolved in the pandemic as doctors better understand the disease, including the types of drugs used in treatments. The shift around ventilators has potentially far-reaching implications as countries and companies ramp up production of the devices.
