People decry meat price hike

Mutton being sold at wholesale rate of Rs 880 per kilogramme

RAWALPINDI: People in the garrison city have strongly reacted to the arbitrary increased in the meat prices by the butchers.

According to a market survey conducted by Daily Express, Mutton was being sold at Rs1,200 per kilogramme and beef at Rs600 per kilogramme whereas official rates were Rs800 for mutton and Rs400 for beef.

Buyers at butcher shops said the authorities should take notice of the price hike ahead of Eidul Fitr.

The meat prices have been fixed by the district administration in consultation with the district price control committee which comprises of traders and government officials.

However, a representative of Jamiatul Quraish Meat Welfare Association has reportedly said that they would not accept official prices.

District authorities did not consult the butchers while fixing the meat price, the representative claimed. He said mutton was being sold at wholesale rate of Rs 880 per kilogramme and thye could not retail it at Rs800 per kilogramme.

He said the association was not consulted before fixing the price of mutton and beef.
