Elections: FLASH governing body elected
Prof Pervez Akhtar was elected rresident and Dr Tariq Aziz was elected senior vice president of the governing body of the Free Legal Aid Society for Helpless (FLASH) on Monday.
Muhammad Zafarullah was elected vice president; Shahid Usman was elected general secretary and Sabahat Rizvi joint secretary. Prof Akhtar said FLASH provides free legal aid, by engaging advocates for the prisoners in jails or lock ups who cannot afford legal counsel. He said that FLASH also gave suggestions to government departments as well as NGOs for improving the conditions in the prisons and to for quicker disposal of criminal cases.
He said that in 2010, 110 cases were s taken to court bay FLASH lawyers and it is currently pleading 48 cases. He said that the society was not receiving any financial assistance.
