240 cops under treatment for Covid-19

Police playing vital role in fight against virus, says AIG Ghani

RAWALPINDI: A head constable of Punjab police has succumbed to the coronavirus while 240 are still under treatment in hospitals across the province. This was disclosed by the Punjab Additional Inspector General (AIG) Inaam Ghani late on Wednesday.

He added that the test results of over 4,872 policemen are still awaited.

AIG Ghani said that all infected security personnel are receiving treatment in different hospitals across the province while a head constable of Lahore police, Shams, succumbed to the virus during treatment.

The police are fighting the virus by performing duties at different spots, including at quarantine centres, he said. The AIG further said that the police are also played a vital role in the fight against Covid-19 as escorts of ambulances which shift the infected or suspected Covid-19 patients to hospitals. Further, the security personnel also come into contact with thousands of people daily as part of their deployment to enforce the lockdown.

Police also ensured the implementation of a curfew in areas where coronavirus positive cases emerged, he said.

The official expressed that the security personnel are rigorously performing their duties despite being at high risk of contracting the contagion.
