Vendors fined Rs4.66m for price-gouging

District administration officials have taken action against 937 retailers

KARACHI: As the crackdown against hoarders and profiteers continues, district administration officials have taken action against 937 retailers and imposed penalties of at least Rs4.66 million, said a statement issued by Karachi commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shallwani on Sunday.

According to the statement, deputy commissioners (DCs) penalised shopkeepers throughout the city, including 225 in South district, 88 in East district, 196 in West district, 233 in Central, 70 in Malir and 125 in Korangi.

Shopkeepers were fined Rs1.62 million in the South district, Rs590,000 in East district, Rs300,000 in West district, Rs943,000 in Central district, Rs69,000 in Malir and Rs1.13 million in Korangi district.

Shallwani had earlier directed all DCs to ensure that essential food items are being sold at the rates set by the Sindh government during the month of Ramadan. He further ordered the officials to take action against any shops and stores not displaying the official price lists.
