PESHAWAR: The provincial chief executive on Sunday called for devising a uniform policy framework for protecting the basic rights of labourers in the province.

This was stated by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan while presiding over a meeting to review the progress of the provincial labour department on Sunday.

CM Mahmood further directed to constitute a committee, headed by the additional chief secretary and with representation from all relevant departments, to prepare proposals for a single and inclusive law under a single department for facilitating labourers.

The meeting was briefed about the steps taken for the welfare of the labour community in the province, fixing minimum wages, progress on collecting data about labourers, matters related to the regularisation of contract employees of the Workers Welfare Board and other issues.

K-P Labour Minister Shaukat Yousfzai briefed the chief minister on the issues faced by labourers working in mines due to the existence of several laws which place regulation under different departments. The chief minister directed senior officers of all the relevant departments to review existing laws governing mines and labourers and to come up with proposals for a uniform policy which is looked at by a single department.

The chief minister further remarked that protection of the basic rights of labourers and their wellbeing was one of the top priorities of his government.

In this regard, the chief minister further ordered to expedite work on the computerised data collection of labourers across the province and to work on drastic reforms in the labour department.

He also issued instructions to make the Workers Welfare Board an effective body for protecting the basic rights of labourers.

K-P Additional Chief Secretary Shakil Qadir, Finance Secretary Atif Rehman, Principal Secretary to CM Shahab Ali Shah and labour secretary and other relevant officials also attended the meeting.
