Britain bans Dr Zakir Naik: report

Britain banned a popular Muslim preacher, Dr Zakir Naik from entering the country, a paper reported on Friday.

Britain banned a popular Muslim preacher, Dr Zakir Naik from entering the country, a paper reported on Friday, citing the interior minister.

Dr Zakir Naik, a 44-year-old television preacher, had been due to give a series of lectures in London and northern England but new Home Secretary Theresa May decided to bar him, said the Daily Telegraph. "I have excluded Dr Naik from the UK," said May, cited by the paper. "Numerous comments made by Dr Naik are evidence to me of his unacceptable behaviour.

"Coming to the UK is a privilege not a right and I am not willing to allow those who might not be conducive to the public good to enter the UK." May, a Conservative politician who became home secretary in the new government last month, has the power to exclude or deport an individual if she believes their presence in Britain could be dangerous.

Naik had been filmed on a website making inflammatory comments, interior ministry sources told the newspaper.

According to the Telegraph, in a web posting from 2006, he said: "Beware of Muslims saying Osama bin Laden is right or wrong. I reject them... we don't know. "But if you ask my view, if given the truth, if he is fighting the enemies of Islam, I am for him. I don't know what he's doing. I'm not in touch with him. I don't know him personally. I read the newspaper. "If he is terrorising the terrorists, if he is terrorising America the terrorist, the biggest terrorist, every Muslim should be a terrorist."

Who were killed? innocent Japanese civilians Does any nation have the guts to call US a terrorist for that act or its just collateral damage, Osama and like minded have learnt all this from US and may be justifying themselves quoting US attacks,there is nationalist terrorism also, it exists and thriving in one form or the other.All collateral damages and death are justified by US. Same is being done by AL Qaeda. We must not ignore this and call spade a spade.Tomorrow oil producing nations stop supply to US next moment they will be invaded, one nation has already been invaded through conspiracy. Regarding Zakir Naik ,UK has all the right to stop his entry but the reasons which has been given is all hypocrisy. If correct reasoning is done one will find he has always condemned terrorism. For his behaviour against different religion he never abused other religions. He may appear harsh but thats his shortcoming and he must correct for that.

Shabbir Bukhari | 14 years ago | Reply Dr Zakir is a hate preacher.He pretends to encourage the inter faith dialogue but in reality he is supremacist.He often calls scholars of other faiths and humiliate them in-front of a large Muslim audience.As for UK govt banning him, I think its a welcome step. By not directly condemning the acts of terrorism such people indirectly condone the acts of Islamists and Jihadists who think they have lenience to kill all the westerns.

Can any one say who invited UK to enter Afghanistan or Iraq? No body. It was an invasion which has created more bloodshed than Saddam could do.They dont have intellect to debate with him and also his position would have become clearer. UK doesnt want to give that chance to Zakir. Western govts have one agenda either you toe their line or get invaded. Didnt they put sanction on India after nuclear testing? javed iqbal bhat | 14 years ago | Reply i cant understand what is wrong with uk govt. and some of my friends who posted their comments here,Dr. zakir naik never advocated osama .he just said that i am not aware of the fact,what we saw ,hear or read about Laden is either from cnn or bbc both run by america and uk respectively.So if we are not aware of the fact we cant make any opinion .It is said in the Quran that before making any opinion ,first go through the fact.he said if Laden is responsible for these barberic events he should be given what he deserve.But i certainly knows who is responsible for the killings of inocent muslims in iraq and afganistan.it is Bush,so in my opinion Bush is No.1 terrorist.These are the words of Dr. zakir Naik. I know we human beings feel it very hard to agree with something which we believe for long time.But I also know most of us are intelligent enough that if we devout our time with sincerity to learn anything we do eventually understand it.But then there are broadly speaking 2 group of human beings.One group even after understanding the truth they reject it because the truth goes against their desires.The other group who accept the truth even if it goes against their own desires.examples of such people in contemporary world are likes of yousef Estes,Ivan ridely,Abdur Raheem Green and many others like them. thandageswaran | 14 years ago | Reply Zakir Naik is a victim of his own tactics. Last two days Peace TV has been show casing how he is a peace loving man and how he has been quoted out of context. In fact in all his speeches, where he derides other religions, he, either out of ignorance or with malicous intent, quotes statements from scriptures which are out of context so as to suit his argument. Anyone who listens to him will only be amused by his argument and statements which are more like that of a standup comedian. If his brand of practicing Islam is for world peace, majority of isalmic world should be icons of peace. We know Indoensia and Turkey are two Muslim majority states where there is natural peace where non-muslims live without fear. India, which was ruled my muslim rulers, did have peace for most of the period. There were many Sufi saints who are reverred by people of all faiths - for they had transcended beyond religion. If passports having Israli visa is enough to ban the entry of the person in islamic states, what is the great justification UK should provide in banning Zakir Naik.

They never accept you nor some of us 'outdated' folks, still alive and kicking. Look on the other side of your eastern border, where no matter how out-dated and all-exclusive, unsocial people live; they are obsessed with what is their own. Almost all of today's dictionaries define a Terrorist as "someone who uses violent action, or threats of violent action, for political purposes" The key phrase in these dictionaries will be "for political purposes" Dr Zakir's definition of a "terrorist" in his lecture in Bradford was basically "one who strikes terror" and he did make it clear that people who are not among the righteous should be "terrified" or be "threatened" by a true Muslim. Ideally a Muslim, just like almost all practitioners of any of the major religions of the world, rejects the life of crime, lives in peace, treating all mankind with kindness and respect, etc. Dr Zakir was asking all Muslims to be that kind of "terrorist" and NOT the kind defined by the Americans! Its a real shame! I suppose the UK was feeling "terrorised" by that! But politicians will be politicians and they would most certainly be someone who take any kind of action for political purposes".

As far as spreading of Islam is concerned, I think before taking the battle onto their grounds we should look at ourselves, we should be ashamed of calling Pakistan and many other countries Islamic republic. How would you feel about a Jew entering into Pakistan and starts preaching Judaism in Pakistan? Than why do we have a double standard when it comes to the west, we would condemn all of their action make a big news out of it, where we have many more problems, much serious to deal with than discussing and condemning why he was not granted visa, Yes if it were to be one of our student who excels in his field and they would not let him in would be something debatable but as far religion preaching is concerned I believe we should first fix ourselves than try to preach Islam to other people. The very mention of their names evokes terror in the underworld”. to which Dr Naik said; “...The moment the underworld hear the name of Inspector Angre, they are terrified, so Inspector Angre of the Mumbai Police Force is a terrorist for the underworld of Mumbai”. in this respect when he says “As far as terrorist is concerned, I tell the Muslims that every Muslim should be a terrorist… What is the meaning of the word terrorist? Terrorist by definition means a person who terrorises. When a robber sees a policeman he’s terrified. So for a robber, a policeman is a terrorist. So in this context every Muslim should be a terrorist to the robber… Every Muslim should be a terrorist to each and every anti-social element. I’m aware that terrorist more commonly is used for a person who terrorises an innocent person. In this context, no Muslim should even terrorise a single innocent human being. Most of us believe that freedom of speech means that we can say anything we want but that to an extent is not true, as freedom always comes with responsibilities and due to those responsibilities we can not say certain things. Now if UK is banning him from getting into the country that is their right, I respect Dr. Naik but we have to agree with some of the comments May have. She is considering the betterment of the British people and though we dont see it but Dr. Naik does provokes the minority Muslims in the west. Take it this way, would we ever let Iltaf Hussain to get into Pakistan and spread hatred among ourselves, never though he is a Muslim and we are a Muslim state. Freedom of speech should be just that, but here it seems Dr Zaik is being potrayed to be a 'terrorist'because of a few distorted comments. Can we all bear in mind Osama Bin Laden was a regular visitor at the whitehouse before 9/11. Bin Laden and his cronies were proud of the attrocities he committed around the world and openly admitted them, yet 9/11 was his biggest attrocity and he denied being involved!Why? It does not follow that he has good or sane things to say. He is a preacher who is more of an extremist than modernist. In fact, I much taken back by educated Pakistanis who really adore him. I hope people here realize that the decision to ban him is perfect. He is a pure supporter of the likes of Osama bin Laden and therefore, he himself may be labelled as a terrorist sympathizer. I hope he is banned from entering Pakistan as well otherwise he will taint our already tainted mullahs.

I just read blog where a Pakitani blogger says, Ahmedis have the all the rights they being a Muslim and people of Pakistan must rethink on non-alienating them. With the threat of terrorism prevalent in the UK, why should they allow Dr. Zakir Naik to enter? Would any of us let someone enter our homes who is positive to the idea of threat to us? I live in the UK, and I am a Pakistani and a Muslim and my loyalties lay with Pakistan more than they do with the UK, but one should not lose the ability to rationalize the fears of others. If Dr. Zakir Naik is fanning that fear, then he shouldn't be allowed entry. If that statement by him regarding Osama bin Laden is accurate then, to be honest, even I, as a Pakistani, do not want him here. Let him fuel the fire of hatred where they let him, but kudos to the British government for not letting him do so here. Everyone should be clear that this is not by any means a question of freedom of expression. And for those who choose to make this into a freedom of expression issue, please hold your tongues about the caricatures of the prophet in that event. All rights and freedoms can be limited within reason - and sometimes without reason, as Pakistan knows this best, with it's utter lack of freedoms for its minorities, esp. in th aftermath of the attacks on the Ahmadiyya mosques. Yet the root of Naik's message is that Islam- and just his brand at that- is the only possible way of life for a reasonable and ethical person. Anyone who is a non-Muslim is therefore either stupid, or worse deliberately denying an evident truth. I have seen him claim that rape (which he puzzlingly associates with female sexual morality rather than with male violence) is more prevalent in the West than in Islamic countries. Apparently he has not looked at any of the reports about the sexual abuse of women in Pakistan, where rape is simply not reported. As for the question of where we get our information on OBL from, well you can see his videos where he claims responsibility for terrorist acts himself. Naik implies that OBL is misjudged, which is a tacit kind of support for him. Britain certainly has the right to bar anyone who preaches support for violent terrorism. Also, am I the only one who finds Naik's schoolboy trick of rote learning passages from scripture hilarious? He looks like a smug prefect in assembly.

I have witnessed Muslims preaching religion freely on Oxford street and Ealing Broadway with banners hanging on their desks: "There is only one God and that is Allah" and all other religions peacefully passing by, not pressing the panic button. Can you imagine a Cristian with a banner saying "There is only one God and that is Christ" on the streets on Karachi. Can you even begin to imagine the consequences. However, the nation has never permitted religious extremism from any side. It is the same country that had also barred Geert Wilders from entering last year on account of Islamic blasphemy. After all it is their country and they have every right to refuse entry to whoever they believe could create a chaos. Maintaining peace in the country should not be confused with lack of freedom of speech.

Can you justify that? Keep in mind Srinagar, and Hindu Muslim situation. He added that wishing a Christian 'Merry Christmas' means your withdrawal from Islamic faith and considering Christ God's son. All he is trying to say is that we dont know for sure if Osama Bin Laden is right or wrong, or for that matter US is right or wrong. Where do we usually get information about Osama or Al Qaeda? From the US Government and Media, who we know for sure are blatant liers and are world's biggest propaganda machines. Secondly, if we call Osama Bin Laden a terrorist then why arent we calling US government a terrorist, who has been following its imperialist/colonial strategy for the last 50-60 years, as its growth model. Again, no one or for that matter Dr.Zakir, is saying that Osama is a priest or a terrorist, but we do need to look into what we hear, with a very critical eye and therefore need to draw are conclusions more sensibly.

Can Christians, Hindus or Qadianis preach to anyone in Pakistan? Even Shias here fear for their lives if they are seen taking too high-profile a role in their religious practices. Suhaib | 14 years ago | Reply islam is against terrorism. zakir naik is being quoted out of context. the true context is…. if a Muslim sees a rapist, the rapist should get terrified, if a robber sees a Muslim he should get terrified. in this sense every Muslim should be a terrorist who terrorizes the anti-social elements of the society. for example when a robber sees a police man, he gets terrified, for the robber the policeman is a terrorist!

Can't we all agree that he's inciting hatred with these comments? This man has a following and he's telling his followers that it is okay to be a terrorist! That's pretty dangerous. I for one can understand why the British government banned him.
