The police are looking for two young men, both believed to be O-Level students, suspected of murdering their 17-year-old classmate, whose week-old decomposed body was found in the bushes in DHA Phase VIII on Saturday night.
Ahmed Bilal Macdi, a resident of Phase IV, was killed by a group of classmates and their friends. Two of them are at large, but three boys, Abu Baqar, Sagheer and Sagheer’s brother, are in custody. The police did not want to disclose the names of the two boys who are on the run.
Ahmed’s grief-stricken father Syed Jamal Macdi, who is the finance director at the Pakistan Defence Officers Housing Society, told The Express Tribune that the victim was the youngest of his four siblings.
“I hope justice is done and the murderers get exemplary punishment,” he said. Ahmed Bilal was laid to rest at the Gizri graveyard in Phase IV on Sunday.
Jamal Macdi said his son went missing on July 22 and the family became worried when he didn’t return home after informing his family that he was going out.
Citizens-Police Liason Committee chief Ahmed Chinoy, whose unit played an instrumental role in cracking the case, said that the home minister, Manzoor Wassan, had specifically tasked him to find the teenager, when the family received a ransom call for around Rs2 million.
“Usually in ransom calls, the criminals give a deadline and the destination where the money should be placed. However, in this case there was no such details,” Chinoy said, adding that they then suspected the involvement of Ahmed’s classmates as they were supposedly the last ones with him.
Teenager Abu Baqar, a resident of Shireen Jinnah Colony, was the first one to be picked up after the ransom call was traced. During questioning, he confessed to killing Ahmed Bilal and told the authorities where they had dumped the body. Gizri DSP Zameer Abbasi said the victim was strangled to death and hit over the head with a heavy object like a block. No firearms were used.
The main suspect Abu Baqar is said to be a Hafiz-e Quran and the son of a school teacher.
When asked how the body went undiscovered for eight days, a DHA spokesperson said Phase VIII was a vast area and there were many spots where it could have gone unnoticed. “Like elsewhere in Karachi, you can dump a body in DHA phase VIII without being noticed by anyone,” the CPLC’s Chinoy said, adding that there have been other cases in the past when such bodies were eaten by animals.
The name of the young man’s father was erroneously reported as Jalal in Sunday’s edition of this newspaper.

@ali, lets forget everything (nothing is going to change no matter how much we complaint or highlight the issues) . my Prayer's are for Ahmed, May Allah give him place is best of Jannah, and give patience to his family members and are killers are publicly hanged ,
@ali its fraud to over charge, specially on books and copies, very bad impact on students , they learn the art of fraud and easy money making ways, and teachers should be role model for students, not profit making tool
most of DHA school management concern and focus is to make profit from students enrolled in DHA schools , they dont care if kids are becoming future kidnappers or robbers or whatever,, they want to make 400% to 1000% profit thr school canteen by selling chips and samosas etc, the principals main focus is to make profit through every possible way, even by forcing students of class 1 to buy this and this ...thing from canteen at 400% more profit, teachers encourage students to destroy books and copies, again n again, (while showing anger towards student while checking of copies, throw books out of class window , it happened many times ..belive me ..) and buy new from canteens at 3 to 4 times more price from market.. each new year of classes, they make billions of rupees from sale of books/copies and stationary charging 4 to 5 times more from market, teacher cannot even recall name of their students unless students were asked to bring 1000 or 2000 rupees for skating class or clay class, all these extra activity classes are phony , just to mint money, such thing do not happen christian missionary schools , in this O/A level school every day after schools there are gangsters gather outside school and fight ,, use most dirtiest language in presence of women and young kids,,,
its said and, shocking news for me such a peacful boy he was. they were our land lord once, I knew him since 2010.
Everyone please take a deep breath and look at what you are hurling against each other. The ET just provided us with "details" of the incident and all you guys could do was to spat at each other on the details. It is naturally a first-reaction shock to anyone who would hear that the culprit was a O'Level student and a Hafiz-e-Quran. These two teachings doesnt render a person to be murderous, but somehow this happened.
One side of the public needs to stop focusing on the two central words and logically understand that there may have been personal grievances, flared angers and ugly truths that caused this tragic event. Period.
The other side of the public needs to understand that ET just provided "news".You shouldn't be saying, "why the word Hafiz-e-Quran" was mentioned. It is to show, that one cannot trust anyone in this world, be it a religious figure or a normal person. Materialistic desires can stir evil in all hearts. But a fact cannot be neglected that there mullahs who teach the wrong side of Islam, to such an extent that even an American born desi can be convinced of it. However, this again has nothing to do with this news.
Lastly, this post wasnt about the battle between modernity and Islam, it wasnt about whether the student was an O'Levels or a Hafiz, it was actually about morals and the human nature. Human nature is extremely unpredictable. Please, leave this news at the debate of human nature rather than of educational or religious influence. Let's think LOGICALLY rather than EMOTIONALLY for once!!!!
No words can describe this loss, but instead of fighting over it with our own selfish views, why cant we just pray for the family. Prayers and blames certainly dont go hand in hand....
Oh My God!!! Condolences To The Dear Family. Ahmed And I Were At The Same School :( Rest In Peace Ahmed We All Miss U Dearly ;((
Poignant indeed, however what's more perturbing is that most of the commentators here have highlighted the fact that the murderer, Abu Baqar was a Hafiz-e-Quran. Now we all know, how mullah friendly the Pakistani society is and we all have good reason to be but instead of taking this incident as a way to vent out your personal grudges, its better to sympathize and leave it be because obviously our comments are not helping anyone but making them less tolerant to religion (particularly the ones who are Hafiz-e-Quran). The fact that Abu Baqar memorized the entire Quran does not mean that he is any more or less likely to commit the murder or any other crime for that matter. It also does NOT mean that he was brainwashed. This time for once it is not the mullahs who need to bear the full brunt of the nation's fury. If he memorized the Quran does not mean he has been exalted to the status of an angel; Abu Baqar is human and as imperfect as anyone else. Therefore, criticize him, he deserves it; for his stupidity, foolishness and greed that resulted in his friend's death but not because HE IS A HAFIZ-E-QURAN AND HAD BEEN WIRED/PROGRAMMED TO DO WHAT HE DID.
Lesson for all the youngsters who shun their parents over friends!!!
What is the reason behind all this matter!!! why his friends betrayed in such a deadly manner?
What is the reason behind all this matter!!! why his friends betrayed in such a deadly manner?
but the question is that why the hell did they do it?? why did they kill him?? and its not about being a Haafiz-ul-Quran.. anyone can be a D*g.. its just how children are raised by their parents.. Its very very sad.. and we call ourselves MUSLIMS?? these type of people have no right to call themselves as HUMAN BEINGS, and being called as a MUSLIM goes out of the question!!
this is so terrible they should give them punishment so this will not happen in future this is the one case which we are coming across but there are so many people killed every day but no one is there to take any actions we the youth have to stand for the right of humanity of this country our beloved country Pakistan please wakeup and help our country and poor helpless people of this country.
Extremely tragic.
May God rest his soul in peace and give high position in Jannah-tul-Firdous .... and patients to his parents and family ...

ASk everyone to come. This is for your family, your friends. This is for your country.
i really don't know how are ppl so heartless!!!! :(
may ALLAH save our country :( please ALLAH have mercy on us :(
the murderer should be punished in a same manner as he did with that innocent boy
i cannot believe a hafiz e quran could do that
Condolences to the family of the poor child. May his soul rest in peace. The dilemma these days is not lack of education but also the ignorance of the literate people. The only soluiton to these crimes is justice for all! People are not even frightened of the police and the law enforcing agencies. Such crimes can be eliminated if the culprits are given due punishment soon..
Extremely tragic incident.... In this way no one can be trusted as anybody could turn out to be a criminal!!!! May his soul rest in peace

JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENYED !!!
Can anyone shed light on the motive of the killing?
One of them is a Hafiz-e-Quran, the rest of them are students of O Levels, so that means that apart from madrassah reforms, school reforms are also necessary. How can one draw a line here then? Extremism in schools too then huh??!! Talk sense people talk sense.. its about what's happening to our youth at large and at this age, regardless of what they're studying or where they are studying.
Capital Punishment FOR SURE and it should be broadcasted live on all tv channels/ screens around the city just like Mubarak's on going trial is in Egypt. The law enforcement agencies need to show all the other animal's in the country that they CANNOT get away with behaviour like this. Do it!!!
What do you mean by "olevel" student? does that distinguish this case somehow??? how about writing education information of all the criminals from now on. It is indeed a tragedy. May Allah give sabr to the family. Very poorly written article...
After reading all the comments all I can say is that we are definilty heading for disaster.....rite now the only thing we r doing is blaming the madrassas and the molvis...... We have left Islam so far behind that it's very easy for us to blame the molvis for everything that goes wrong.....yes it was one of the hafiz who killed him but should all the religious people be hanged for tht??? We believe everything tht the media tells us! But none of us are using our mind......we r Americas donkey.....does anyone of us realize that maybe (apart from this incident) all the killings that are happening are not Muslims?.? Maybe they are spies?? Maybe there was no Osama???? How convenient is it that the second any blast happens.....some random MUSLIM terrorist organizations calls and takes the blame for it??? What happens in Norway was violence but not terrorism....only Muslims have been tagged as terrorist ....so what do we do? Change our religion??. Has anyone of u thought that if Karachi has been saved From soooooo many natural disasters it could be some so called fanatic molvis prayers.? Cause I think for nothing to have happened as yet being on the coastal line is actually a miracle?..? P.s I know my comment is not related to the above article but pleas understand if we leave Islam behind, there is nothing left for us! This is the end!!pls stop blaming the molvis for everything!!
Seriously???, a life is brutally lost; and most people are cribbing over the accused being a hafiz-e-Quran.... what needs reforms is our national sense of priority...
The "enlightened" west.... as far away from the alleged evil throes of madrasshas throws up examples of extreme brutality with boring regulairty... latest being the attacks in Norway... yet... no "moderate" Pakistani ever thinks reform is needed in the West...why is it that the default position is always blame Islam and token muslims?.
Please all of you . have some respect. A family has lost heir child , amother who raised him from a baby has lost her son, his father sisters and brothers have lost a loved one .. please have respect and keep your comments for some other time, I am a memeber of the family and it hurts me to see this paying of condolence turn into a discussion of point of views..what does it matter WHO what Why When.. Right now just pray for the lost boy and may Allah give courage to the family to bear this unimaginable oss.. NOTHING anyone can say or do will bring back the Child parents raised for 1 years .. just stand with them and think of what it would be like if it was you who had to suffer this loss.. PLEASE keep your discussion for later
When DHA top notches express inability to pursue matters related to white corolla rapist case, ( as I personally know) then DHA residents will reap such atrocities from time to time.
@A J Khan Please, if the main suspect was a hafiz-e-quran, it doesn't mean that's what incited him to murder his class fellow. what about the others who were not hafiz-e-quran. We can't directly blame maulvis for this heinous act. Sad incident indeed.
@Hasan: I fully agree....
he was a haafiz but had never studied in any madressa people did it at home and where the helldo the maoulvis come in this whole scene the dude was a mordern day educated olevelean from a top level institute its more of a mordenity and the want for worldly desires without effort because of the libralists and the american dream propaganda than taliban plz dont stereotype without proper information... humble request... ramadan kareem mubarak to every one aswell
I request all those hurling obscenities at my school and at madrassas, to please quit it! You cannot blame the entire institution for some gruesome incident on the basis of this mere fact that they, the culprit as well as the victim, both belonged to it! This is one of the best, well-reputed institutions we're talking about! The school is not responsible! Certainly not!
They said "This youth will change the country". Well, it sure is!!!
Irrespective of cast, creed and nationa,we should all condemn the gruesom act. Our deepest condolence to the grieved family.May his sole rest in peace.(Ameen)
its a sad news indeed... but its even more saddening to see how HAFIZ E QURAN has been quoted here... the murder has nothing to do with religious extremism.. i support anti-extremism myself but its sad when any irrelevant event of violence is attached to Islamic identity ... Journalists should be careful about that...
So sorry for the victim boy. This is due to overall moral degradation of the society. The culprits named above are responsible only for this particular incident.
Mullahs.......why?.....all five fingers aren’t same......there are manyyyyy good Mullahs too....a society without Mullahs would be incomplete.......and plxxxx I’m not liking the negative things about hafiz, mullahs, or molvis.......Even though some of them are culprits but they aren't representing all of the Mullahs
@SH: i will just add to what you wrote....i pray to Allah these boys are given capital punishment and hung from the noose....because under islamic law, they are all major and cannot hide behind their age to get concessions from court.
First, kill all the Mullahs.....then lets decide which person or faction is at fault here....
Poor guy. He never even got to live his life :/ I hope they find the sickos. I hope he gets vengeance. But, all of us, what can we do but hope anyway?
@anonymous: yeahh its July 22.
The reason why these boys killed/ murdered Ahmed was that, Ahmed had recognized them .. and knew that they kidnappers were none other but his very own FRIENDS! may he gets a higher rank in Jannah. Ameen.
No doubt this is a very dark side of our society that we as a whole nation have lost our values. We do not teach our children the values of life and humanity. All those values which were the treasures of our society i.e. respect for elders, love for youngsters and a family life every thing is going to be destroyed by our so called busy and mechanical life. This one case one of the thousands of same cases happening every other day. We should not blame O-Level or madarissas, everybody in the society is equally responsible. If you have noticed this change and want to protect your nation, your country and your families for furthur destruction then at least come forward to help each other in retaining the future of our children. its our duty.
May Allah bless the departed soul and grant courage to bear the family to sustained the loss. My heart is weeping. Is it the society we are making? We have to work to improve the society as everybody is exposed to this misery. We have to be careful about the friends of our children and need to spend more time with him.The killing by Hafiz-e-Quran is incidental but it requires careful analysis as it is simply unbelievable that people having Quran in their heart can do this sort of ruthless act.
Its indeed a very sad incident. May Allah rest his soul in peace and grant his family sabar.
One small request to the editing staff - please try not to publish SMSish English. The least you can do it is to fix it before publishing.
Some student from this same school commented below and I am finding their English extremely poor which is weird considering they are doing O levels, this probably shows the quality of students and exactly what the school is teaching them. Rest I would say that parents need to be more vigilant.
Culture of hatred, resulting into killings has prevailed in our society. It needs to be controlled by all men of say in society. Greed and easy money making is also another social menace. Our Ulemas and Imams have great responsibility to curb it. Parents have now maximum responsibility to keep an strict watch on their children for their expenditure, movements and a close, rather strict, watch on the contacts with their friends, their quality and even their families` backgrounds. They should regularly visit school/college, without any programmes, to see performance and attendence and also to see their teachers for their opinion. They should also observe that if the behavior of their child is not getting aggressive. Children should not be allowed to play with toy weapons and see videos of fighting/firing. My deep hearted condolences to the berieved family. May ALLAH, THE ALMIGHTY give patience to the family for this great great loss. Ameen.
though i'm not from his family or friends but im from the same school and what i personally think is that it has nothing to do with either our school or being a "hafiz-e-quran". and i certainly agree with what nusrat osama said that at the age of 16 one does not really read the quran with meanings. what ever the case was i dont think its all about ransom. the murderer was just 16 and probably he just wanted to get away from police for sometime so he asked for ransom. as mentioned in ET “Usually in ransom calls, the criminals give a deadline and the destination where the money should be placed. However, in this case there was no such details,” this confirms that it has no relation with ransom ! guys at this age are lil' cracked . i believe there must be some other personal issue .
whatever the case it is. It should be completely investigated and justice should be done !
i really dont undrstand how O levels boys can end up murdering someone, that even not someone random but a friend.Besides this, what could be the reason for the murder? Its just insane.
Its so shocking that now a days in our country we all are directly or indirectly related to these issues
his family wasn't invovled.....and every mula or maulana rn't the same.......there are manyyyyy good people aswell....we should not think about them ke wo extreemist hee honge.....:(
I knew both of them personally. Abubakar Sadiq was a hafiz-e Quran.. it was a matter of money but also some personal issues.. friends said tht abubakar and the 3 othrs had a fyt with Ahmed macdi. WE cannot blame the madrassah or the DHA skool for this act.. coz no educational system teaches this... Its just some problems between the friends whch destroyed evrything. You cannot blame the O level system ,.. since we're studying in Pakistan......... ! People its sad.. stop blaming madrassah,O level skool.. teachers & parents.. ! This was in his faith.. And the boy Abubakar Sadiq was known as the gem of our skool,, can yu believe it..? We must find out who the othr 3 r.. Then only we'll knooww the real truth. Inshallah Justice will b done.. But For now Abubakar's case should b solved and he must be punished the same way.
@SH and AJ KHAN ... the boy was too young to have really understood the significance of being a hafiz.... at 16 one does not really read the Quran with meanings. i am sure it was not the madrassah at fault where he learnt hifz... it is degradation of societal norms in general and the unlawful conditions in the country, where killing and extortion are the order of the day.
very very sad incident.. but i would like to ask that why is "O-level" specifically mentioned ?? just say that they were friends, classfellows or students...
the way ET mentioned O-level seemed like a network parallel to Jamait e Islami Tulba..!
The problem is that these o level school system is creating a mindset in their students that as if they are living in a fantasy world and they have freedom to do any thing in the world which creates a long term negative impact in the mind of students that they are modest than others and this thing creates hatred and the the problem of discrimination starts from here.
Condolences to the family of the poor boy....it is shocking...spcially the fact that friends did it and for what....money!!!???!!! Ya Allah, the stories coming out now a days for money are horrendous. It seems that is the only focus left in our society....We need to wake up .... May Allah grant this boy eternal Jannah....and may we learn a lesson here....
Just because ONE of the culprits was a Hafiz, people are having orgasms bashing madrassas and molvis. What about the other FOUR culprits who were NOT Hafiz, and had no association with any Madrassa? going by twisted logic of a few posters here, non-madrassa affiliated people are four times more likely to commit murder than a madrassa students, as 4 out of 5 culprits were not Hafiz.
My Condolences to the family. For very saddness there is happiness to follow. It is not the Madrassa teachings fault but the society and envrionmental values. Also its is the destiny of what is written for theese young men and what lesson we all are to learn from these events.let justice be done - capital punishment qissas law should apply all over pakistan. hang murders in public and let them rot.
If ignorant TTP weren't enough trouble for Pakistan, educated kids thought lets jump in. Like someone once said "Only thing Pakistanis mastered was art of violence."
@SH. Oh please! they are believed to be O level students involved as well. why not reforms for the whole educational system. there have been many murder cases in universities as well. there was no point of mentioning that he was a hafiz e Quran. His learning Quran and madrassas have nothing to do with him learning Quran.
Anyone can be a criminal.
@SH: Take it easy dear. Just because main accused is a Hafiz-e-Qur'an does not mean that he learned the art of killing at his madrissah. Please get rid of stereotypes. You are not making a difference.
it is one of the saddest news that i have heard.... sad not only because ahmed was the son of a person whom i know personally but because his murderers were students of our DHA school...it is an example which is sure to spoil the atmosphere further unless the culprits are sought and given exemplary punishment ... it also shows lack of moral values being taught at schools and homes and the general degradation of our society...may Allah give courage to the parents to bear this great loss..ameen and may the soul of the child rest in peace..
@Choas A.D: This has happened numerous times in the past! This is NO SIGN of the end. Some people, I tell you. Always surprised by the level of ignorance in our society.
Horrible. Condolences to the family; may God grant them courage and peace. Hafiz-e-Quran???!! Authorities take note; there's a glaring example of why madrassa reforms are essential...brainwashed kids all over the place that doesn't know any better.
though im not his friend, bestfriend or his family. i feel very sorry for what has happened to syed bilal ahmed macdi. it was not an intelligent human action. especially for a young man who is a hafiz AL-Quran. he should have known that something he would do was something which's worst. may Allah give strength to the families and give him a place in Allah's Jannah, amin ya robbal 'alamin.
Sad incident. :(
Relating to the previous article, name of culprit is Abu Bakar, not Abu Baqar. You might want to correct the typo.
Its a very tragic incident :( May his soul rest in peace :(
""The main suspect Abu Baqar is said to be a Hafiz-e Quran and the son of a school teacher""" May God Almighty save all of us from the savage Molvies. What are they teaching these children. My heart felt condolence with the bereaved family.
Sign of the End Times.
URGH! What's happening in our country!
If you cant trust your friends anymore than who can you trust. Condolences to the family. His father is a good man. May god have mercy on the poor boy and give his family the strength to bear the loss.
Awful, its so sad. Heartfelt condolence to the young boys family, especially the devastated father mentioned above.
