This year’s theme was supposed to be ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration.’ But while the event may have been postponed, we still have tons of iconic, over-the-top looks to browse through in memory of outrageous fashion’s biggest night. And so, we’ve shortlisted five Met Gala looks that we’re still scratching our heads over, even years later.
1) Priyanka Chopra (2019)
PC had to take the cake, of course. When you think Met and outrageous, this is the one look that comes to mind. Chopra turned up to the event themed ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ and brought her campiest look to date on to the red carpet. Although the look spawned a million memes, it did what it had to: get people talking.
2) Rihanna (2018)
Each year that Rihanna makes her way to the Met Gala, she sure makes a statement. 2018 was no different. The songstress turned up in her best for the ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ as a Pope – yes, a bedazzled Pope! We rest our case.
3) Sarah Jessica Parker (2015)
Once again, a Met Gala master, SJP not just turned heads but also set social media ablaze with her over-the-top headpiece at the ‘China Through the Looking Glass’ themed event. “I researched that for a really long time. I studied Chinese opera, ballet, theatre, design and costume design. I studied tassels, pom-poms, silk...” she revealed to Harper’s Bazaar back then.
4) Rihanna (2015)
We know, Rihanna is already on the list but we can’t help! This one look inspired a tonne of discourse on the internet as the Disturbia singer ascended the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York. For the exhibition ‘China: Through the Looking Glass,’ RiRi chose a dress that took 20 months to make and weighed a total of 55 lbs!
5) Billy Porter (2019)
If you thought it’s only the women ruling the Met Galas, think again! Porter took it upon himself to make the most fabulous entrance at the Met, perhaps ever. He arrived on a litter carried by six men in what was clearly a nod to Ancient Egypt. But that’s not all: he donned a custom ensemble by The Blonds that rendered him a Sun God. It included a bejewelled catsuit outfitted with 10-foot wings and a 24-karat gold headpiece, as well as custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. Talk about camp!
