Having been a fixture in entertainment since he was a little kid, Rishi leaves behind an illustrious legacy, one akin to what he was a product of - he was born to whats referred to as the ‘First Family’ of Bollywood.
Here's a look back at some of the moments in his larger-than-life world, as shared by India Today and Gulf News- many also shared by Rishi himself on his social media.
Rishi was born to legendary actor Raj Kapoor and his wife Krishna Raj Kapoor in 1952.
He first forayed onto the big screen in 1955 as a three-year-old, making a cameo in his father's iconic film Shree 420 in the song Pyaar Hua Iqrar Hua Hai. He is the youngest one seen in this picture.
This adorable photograph includes many names you might know. Rishi posted this photo to his Twitter with the caption, "Original Coca Cola advertisement. Boney Kapoor, Aditya Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Tutu Sharma and that cute brat Anil Kapoor."
He then debuted as a child actor in Mera Naam Joker in 1970, directed by and starring his father, Raj Kapoor, in the lead.
Rishi went on to star in his first lead role opposite Dimple Kapadia in 1973's Bobby which cemented his status as a competitive actor in the industry - he bagged Filmfare Best Actor trophy for his role in the film.
In this special throwback photo shared by Rishi, he is seen dancing with his mother, the illustrious Krishna Raj Kapoor, who passed away in 2018.
He went on to deliver some great classics over the years including Kabhie Kabhie with future wife Neetu Singh in 1976, and Chandni opposite Sridevi in 1989.
He married his co-star Neetu Singh in 1980. The couple had two children, Riddhima Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir went on to follow his fathers footsteps and is currently one of the most sought-after actors in Bollywood.
The actor is seen here with another Bollywood legend, Rajesh Khanna. "Remembering one of the greatest romantic hero’s of our times on his birthday 29th December. Rajesh Khanna. The first superstar!" wrote Rishi.
He is seen here with his son, actor Ranbir Kapoor, on the stage of IIFA Awards.

In 2018, he was diagnosed with Leukaemia and flew to New York for treatment. Unfortunately, he eventually lost the battle two years later.
He returned to India after more than a year of treatment and was to star alongside Deepika Padukone in the Hindi remake of The Intern.
