The lady’s fury is totally in order, too. Back in Lahore, when asked by waiting reporters to react to the Indian media’s description of her as a style icon, Hina snapped back. “There is paparazzi everywhere,” she said, implying that the Indian journalist’s obsession with her oversized Birkin bag (at Rs1.7 million, said the Times of India), her Roberto Cavalli sunshades and her coloured pearls (South Sea or Mikimoto?) was directly proportional to the limited attention it paid to all serious issues.
Now that’s a serious charge, and regretfully I must admit the beautiful Hina may be right again. The Indian media was so swept off its feet by the trappings of the vision from across the border, it failed to adequately note the path-breaking nature of the joint statement in which, for the first time in several decades, “the people” from both countries were put on top of the bilateral agenda.
In fact, the Pakistani media returned the compliment in some ways. The obsession with the Great Game in both countries abounds: Indian spies are found on sundry street corners in the big and small cities of Balochistan, the return to ‘strategic depth’ in Afghanistan is accompanied by a rush of adrenalin whether or not Kabul is interested in such a relationship with Islamabad in the first place, and Siachen and Sir Creek become coveted markers from where spheres of influence can be enhanced.
But look at what happened this time. The Pakistani side couldn’t possibly object to Delhi’s initiatives to increase interaction between Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control, or across the international border. The offer of “non-discriminatory trade” is hidden deep inside the joint statement, an alias for most-favoured nation status. Let’s see how that pans out when Pakistan’s commerce secretary Zafar Mehmood comes to Delhi to talk to his counterpart Rahul Khullar. (And yes, both are Punjabi).
Actually, it may be a good thing that Hina Rabbani Khar stole the show last week. Pakistan’s “weapon of mass distraction”, as a fully paid-up member of India’s Twitterati set described her, has thrown such a cloud of stardust in the eyes of both medias that it allows both governments — and dare I say, Pakistan’s army, which takes a serious interest in foreign policy, especially with India — to underwrite the small-is-beautiful measures that hawks mostly misunderstand.
The unspoken charge against Hina in Delhi was that at 34 years of age, she couldn’t possibly be anything but a lightweight. She has very little experience, she belongs to Pakistan’s upper-class and is therefore as feudal as they come, and may be a front for the real powers that runs foreign policy, whether Ashfaq Kayani, Asif Zardari, Yousaf Raza Gilani or Rehman Malik.
Thing about Hina is, she’s stunning. There are so few men and women in public life who are so good-looking that the attention is natural. But instead of getting perturbed by the publicity, she would do well to remember that Indira Gandhi was also called a goongi gudiya when she first entered politics — within five years, the country was calling her Durga, the mother goddess.

@agthagola: "....the time is running for peaceful solution of Kashmir." What you mean is "time is running out for peaceful blah..blah..blah"! What do you think is going to happen when that time has run out? The deluge?
As long as the core problem of Kashmir does not resolve with self determination by Kashmiris nothing concreate can take place. indains can buy all khars and Musharafs in Pakistan but they will not make a single milimeter of progress untill they get sense because the time is running for peaceful solution of Kashmir.
Do not under estimate any one. Hina may evolve from a pretty lamb to a roaring tigress if Pakistan is lucky. Pakistan needs a miracle to recover. Let it be in the form of Hina Khar.
@Nadeem Ahmed: " All you can shout is Dawood Dawood, what about Narendera Modi, your own Chief Minister who everyone knows was the one who let Hindus massacre 2500 Muslims, do you have any shame? "
So the Honourable CM Shri Narendra Mode, decided one day, it was time to go kill 2500 Muslims ?
@kailashsethy:
I agree, it is India that needs Pakistans access via road and air links to the West, We should keep relations with india on the back burner and concentrate on improving our internal situation, and need to expose Indias bloody hand in Balochistan and elsewhere, Indias economy is going bust and was expected to grow at 9% but now economists have revised that figure to a timid 5.5%, Pakistan needs to stop trying so hard for peace, India needs peace in the region more than us for growth. Indian mentality is if you stand up to them they respect you, if you want peace with them, they see you as weak, so a few kicks are in order, hope you are listening Ms Khar.
@Anjali Rao:
May I remind you it was Indian agencies who gave birth to the Tamil Tigers, and the Mukti Bahini as well as Baloch rebels, India's hands are not without blood. They include the blood of 60,000 Kashmiris according to HRW and Amnesty Intl, is'nt that more than Dawood Ibrahim and Osama Bin Ladins murder score?
All you can shout is Dawood Dawood, what about Narendera Modi, your own Chief Minister who everyone knows was the one who let Hindus massacre 2500 Muslims, do you have any shame?
You think India is so innocent? wake up.
Nobody was expecting anything material from the foreign minister's visit...i for one, and am very sure every average Indian or Pakistani citien wondered the purpose of the visit apart from nice paid holiday for the ministers and their entourage....the journalists ahd to report on something...with nothing to report on diplomacy....they focused on the presentable minister and her accessories....
With all due respect to the writer, and all Pakistani and Indian friends, this obsession with our new Foreign minister's looks, style and elegance is being blown out of proportion by the media on both sides! Concentrate on her accomplishments/work and not her looks and fashion please. Hina is right - "theres paparazzi everywhere!" The writer should not be part of that classification. Hina Khar is an elegant, educated and intelligent woman and a mother of 2. Please don't bog her down with ridiculous articles about her looks and fashion sense! She should not be compared with Indira or Benazir and blah blah - she is an individual on her own and time will tell how she does but she's off to a good start.
She is not ashamed to be a Pakistani national, just because Osamaji Bin Laden was hiding & killed in Pakistan and that Dawood & Co. are operating their terrorist network aided by the state players in Pakistan. She is well aware of the fact that she has a very delicate & notoriously tricky business on her desk to attend. And to deal with it as a federal minister for foreign affairs, this zestful lady of 34 is seeking a fresh engagement, a new approach to address the quarreling nuclear-armed neighbours.
@Jyoti,
Uttering India Gandhi's name is scandalous in Pakistan. Brave indeed!
I am surprised at the adoration from India, although it is welcome and I thank Indians for it, but honestly I dont see Ms Khar as any beauty, in fact per Pakistan or Lahore, Islamabad , Peshawer standards, she is ver very average, she does not even stir me.....but then, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and instead of fighting one another all the time, I would rather we discuss beauty and pretty things at least, so thats a good start, I think Ms Khar will become and very good leader.
I think it will be better for both Pakistan and India if we leave the relationship as is it now. Probably both should wait 3-5 yrs really to see where pakistan would be. Whoever (politicians or Military or taliban)might be ruling that time, picture will be much clearer. there will be indeed one power center and accordingly policies can be made.
Journey from Indra to Durga was facilitated because of 'Nehru Dynasty' Express. Hina's dynasty travelogue is fraught with numerous breakdowns, track diversions; and the present gods will never allow any new god to join their ranks.
With all respect for Hina ji, it is too far-fetched to compare her with INDIRA GANDHI, the dare devil...
