President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday urged the nation practice selflessness during the holy month of Ramazan.

The president maintained that the month of Ramazan teaches Muslims to understand the difficulties and sufferings faced by the poor segment of society.

He added that the entire world is struggling amid the coronavirus outbreak and urged the nation to adopt precautionary measures, maintain social distancing and pursue the values of love, sacrifice and piousness during this challenging period.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said the entire world is facing drastic consequences of the novel coronavirus and urged the nation to help those in need by demonstrating complete unity and sacrifice.

In a series of tweets, the premier said the nation has neglected the poor and vulnerable in society and urged Pakistanis to use the holy month to seek forgiveness for neglecting the poor.

"We as a nation have been elite-centric in our policies, with no thought for these people, incl in the pandemic," he wrote.

He said the lockdown has affected the daily wage earners, street vendors, labourers and the nation must lift the marginalised citizens out of poverty.

"Let us also resolve as a nation, in this holy month of Ramazan, to lift our marginalised citizens out of poverty & mainstream them as our Prophet PBUH did in the world's first welfare state - Riyasat-i- Madina - and as China has done in lifting 700 m people out of poverty," he added.
