Target killings

Letter June 17, 2010

KARACHI: Target killings have become the norm in Karachi. People step out of their houses uncertain about whether they will return alive. And the city’s crime rate doesn’t get the attention it deserves from the government. In the recent wave of target killings nearly 50 people lost their lives. Time and again, the government has formed ineffective inquiry committees. And under political pressure, it makes a show of arresting people without evidence, or it uses weak FIRs so that the individuals under arrest can get bail with ease. The city’s Capital City Police Officer , Mr Waseem, has accepted that the law enforcement agencies are unable to control the situation.
