KARACHI:

A crowd of charged lawyers, who are all bona fide members of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA), successfully had a resolution passed to seek action against the target killings of their colleagues.

An out of the ordinary general body meeting was hurriedly called at the Shuhda-e-Punjab Hall of the KBA on Thursday. The lawyers vented their anger in speeches and asked the KBA executive body to send the unanimously passed resolution to the registrars of the Sindh High Court and Supreme Court.

The registrars were requested to take judicial notice of both target killings that took place within a week’s time.

Advocate Abbas Bokhari was gunned down last Saturday, leading to protests and a strike on Monday. Two days later, Advocate Muhammad Junaid was shot dead by unidentified men.

“The anguish among the lawyer touched new heights today, this is due to the complete apathy of the government and its security agencies,” said the KBA’s honorary secretary, Haider Imam Rizvi, while addressing the angry and grieving lawyers.

“These killings are a direct threat to the law and have now become a routine. But they will not deter the lawyers from fulfilling their professional obligations.”

After the speeches, members of the KBA held a sit-in before dispersing peacefully.
