Government to improve internet accessibility to facilitate students

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has ordered authorities to improve internet accessibility for students in the country.

He directed the relevant quarters to take necessary measures to enhance internet connectivity so that students could continue their education uninterrupted.

In addition to this, he instructed agencies to improve internet coverage in areas that currently lack the facility.

The President was chairing a meeting to discuss the bandwidth issues in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

He was briefed on the issues faced by Internet users, particularly students, due to pressure on existing internet infrastructure, as people have started working from home and students are taking classes online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Shafqat Mehmood, Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training, Tania Aidrus, Special Assistant to PM on Digital Pakistan, Shoaib Siddiqui, Secretary Information Technology and Telecommunications, Amir Azeem, Chairman, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and Ahmed Mujtaba Memon, Additional Secretary Ministry of Finance, Ahmed Mujtaba Memon attended the meeting.

Internet usage in Pakistan has increased by 15 per cent as the country adjusts to life under lockdown amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The spike has been observed due to increased online activities by educational institutions and businesses and, ‘work from home’ policy adopted by individuals and organisations, according to a Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) press release.

Telecom operators launch new packages to assist users during coronavirus outbreak

PTA reaffirmed that there is sufficient internet capacity available in the country to meet the growing demands of the future.

Telecom operators have taken an extra step to facilitate its users across Pakistan by providing information about COVID-19 along with uninterrupted service.

New packages have been introduced at a lower price point by all Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) to help people to stay and work from home.
