The recently fired daily-wage employees of Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad continued their strike for the sixth consecutive day here on Wednesday.
However, they did manage to get some face-time with local elected representatives and political leaders, who expressed solidarity with them.
The administration of Ayub Medical Complex (AMC) terminated the services of 465 employees, purportedly with the blessings of the provincial government, as the health department was facing financial constraints.
The sacked employees, whose service ranged between 4 to 15 years, included 40 medical officers, paramedical staff, ward orderlies, IT department employees, maintenance and class IV staff including over 100 women.
The sacked employees also blocked Mansehra Road for over half an hour and set up a protest camp within the AMC premises.
Daily Wage Employees Union General Secretary Nosherwan Khan told The Express Tribune that the sacked employees would continue their strike for an indefinite period until they were reinstated.
He accused the AMC administration and an anti-Hazara lobby was active in failing the province’s biggest health facility by creating the situation of law and order.
He asked that the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar has 1200 beds and over 2,400 employees, why is AMC, which has 1000 beds, unable to absorb 500 daily wage employees.
He threatened that all the sacked employees would take to the streets and block the Karakoram Highway from August 1 if they were not reinstated.
