KARACHI: Unpaid municipal workers of Karachi’s defunct city government decided to besiege the commissioner office on Thursday. They will hold a sit-in until their salaries are paid. The commissioner of Karachi, Muhammad Hussain Syed, had assured them that they would be paid for June, but this has not happened yet. The agitated workers had lodged their protest by blocking the main University Road with garbage trucks, causing traffic jams. They said an estimated 2,730 employees were waiting. Municipal Trade Union Alliance Chairman Syed Zulfikar Shah said that he had met the commissioner last week to discuss the matter, and he had assured them that the problem would be ended within two or three days.
