KARACHI: A Russian national was detained on Wednesday by police in Karachi for having an expired Pakistani visa.

The 30-year-old female was travelling near the Edhi Center behind the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi in the Clifton area of Karachi.

She was stopped by the Boat Basin police patrolling the area and asked to submit documents for identification purposes.

She was subsequently arrested when the police discovered that her passport bore an expired business visa. The police said her visa had expired on December 2, 2010.

FIR no. 310/2011 has been registered against her under section 7/14 of the Foreign Act.

Police have detained the Russian national at the Boat Basin police station, and are now inquiring why she did not have her visa renewed.

Earlier this month, two US nationals were barred from entering Peshawar and were sent back to Islamabad for not obtaining permission to enter the provincial capital.

Many foreigners are residing in different parts of the country without legal documents. The situation forced the ministry of interior, in the second week of December last year, to ask the FIA and intelligence agencies to expel all such people from Pakistan by December 30, 2010.
