CPNE urges Sindh govt to exempt journalists, media workers from lockdown restrictions

Dr Jabbar appeals to CM Shah to allow vendors to continue their work for smooth distribution of newspapers

KARACHI: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has urged the Sindh government to exempt journalists and media workers from the travel restrictions as the provincial authorities have imposed a complete lockdown in the province and termed it 'only way' to stem rising coronavirus cases.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced on Sunday a province-wide lockdown for 15 days starting midnight in a bid to contain COVID-19 as the provincial tally has crossed 350.

Under the lockdown all markets, shopping malls, restaurants, public beaches, and other public spots will remain closed. Public transport will also remain shut, he announced.

However, pharmacies, grocery store and other essential services will remain operational.

CPNE secretary general Dr Jabbar Khattak in a statement on Sunday appealed to CM Shah to allow newspapers hawkers and vendors to continue their work for the smooth distribution of newspapers.



He said the role of media is crucial in communicating the necessary directives and precautionary measures against the contagious disease. "Only way to contain the spread of coronavirus is through dissemination of news and awareness related to precautionary measures."

Media has supported the government in all possible manners in creating awareness about COVID-19 precautionary measures, Jabbar said while assuring the authorities that it would continue to play its role in combating the epidemic.
