Selling gutka, mawa: Police ‘take bribe’ for shopkeeper’s release in Karachi

The shopkeeper denies keeping mawa at either his shop or house

KARACHI: The Karachi’s Ittehad Town police has reportedly released a shopkeeper they had arrested, allegedly for selling mawa, after receiving a bribe worth Rs100,000, it has emerged after a video of the shopkeeper went viral.

According to the shopkeeper, Muhammad Sharif, a police party first visited his shop and asked him where he had kept mawa and later, a policeman and a female police officer came to his house, produced three bags of the banned substance and claimed that they were found from his house.

However, Sharif denied keeping mawa at either his shop or house.
The police still arrested him and demanded a bribe in return for his release, claimed Sharif, adding that by then, people from his neighbourhood had also arrived at the police station to resolve the issue.

One of the neighbours also spoke about the matter in the video that went viral, maintaining that they had collected money and given a bribe to ASI Jamali at Ittehad Town police station for Sharif’s release.

Ittehad Town SHO Nisar Lodhi, however, denied the allegations, expressing ignorance about the matter. He added that multiple inquiries against Sharif were underway.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Baldia Town SP Shahla Qureshi stated that she had assigned the inquiry into the incident to the Saeedabad DSP and it was being investigated.
