ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz on Thursday submitted a requisition for summoning the National Assembly (NA) session to discuss the prevailing situation in the wake of increase in the confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country.

Sources, however, said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had categorically rejected the idea of convening the session.

The sources said that the PPP, which is ruling the most affected province of Sindh, had conveyed it to PML-N leaders that it was not an appropriate time to convene the session of parliament.

The PPP believed that elected representatives required to be present among their constituents in this difficult time instead of sitting in the federal capital merely for holding a debate.

Meanwhile, NA Speaker Asad Qasier called on Prime Minister Imran Khan to discuss measures required for curbing the spread of COVID-19.

According to a statement issued by the PM Office, both agreed on forming a parliamentary committee comprising members of the treasury and opposition to tackle the threat of the virus.

PM Imran lauded the cooperation extended by China in preventing the spread of the disease. The premier said that the government was in contact with world bodies to safeguard the people and the country’s economy from its effects.

He reiterated that all the resources will be deployed to provide relief to the people.
