Flour millers worry about wheat transport as Sindh partials shuts down

Flour demand skyrockets as some people begin stockpiling amid COVID-19 fears

KARACHI: As the Sindh government partially shut down inter-city travel in the province, flour millers raised concerns about disruptions in the supply of wheat to the provincial capital.

Karachi Atta Chakki Association president Anis Shahid said that transporters were not bringing wheat to Karachi from different parts of the province, adding that the drivers and other members of the workforce were afraid they would be made to stay in the city or would have to leave without commodities.

Shahid pointed out that due to the uncertain situation amid a partial lockdown in Sindh, people were stocking commodities, especially flour, and the demand had skyrocketed.

He claimed that police had forced many wheat flour vendors in the city to shut down because they were being crowded by customers, adding that he had already apprised the Karachi commissioner about the situation and appealed to him to allow vehicles carrying wheat into the city.
