Seniors recalled for hockey camp

LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has recalled Rehan Butt and Sohail Abbas for the training camp prior to the team selection for the tour of China and Europe.

The duo, along with other senior players, was omitted from the Azlan Shah Cup squad following a poor show in the World Cup and the camp held after the National Championship. The chief selector, Hanif Khan, however, has assured that the seniors are still in contention for a place in the squad for the Asia Cup. The PHF also refused to grant NOCs to the players to participate in the Bangladesh league due to their call-up for the training camp.

“We never discarded the seniors and the doors are open as long as they are fit,” Khan told The Express Tribune. “We have a very important camp starting on June 20 for the Asian Games so this is a priority.”

Meanwhile, the PHF Secretary Asif Bajwa confirmed the finalisation of a foreign coach for the national team but is waiting for the sports ministry’s approval to provide the funds.

“The executive board has endorsed all the recommendation regarding the appointment of the team management as well as the foreign coach,” said Bajwa. “The approval from the sports ministry is still required because the government has to bear the expenses and not the PHF.”
