Sindh govt asks mosques to highlight coronavirus risks, ways to tackle virus

Directives issued to limit the number of visitors at Sufi shrines across Sindh

KARACHI: The Sindh government has asked prayer leaders and mosques to highlight the risks posed by the novel coronavirus and ways to tackle the disease during daily prayers and Friday sermons.

Provincial authorities have confirmed at least 15 COVID-19 cases in Sindh.

The government further said the given directions also apply to other religious congregations at such places.

Considering the risks posed by large crowds at Sufi shrines across Sindh, the provincial government also passed instructions to limit the number of visitors at shrines and provide more space to people for effective social distancing.

Opening and closing times of shrines will be fixed, along with the provision of hand sanitisers and handwashing facilities, said the notification issued.

The provincial government will also establish health desks at shrines.

Today's coronavirus taskforce meeting 

During the 17th meeting of the coronavirus taskforce, presided by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, commissioner Sukkur was instructed to test all pilgrims returning to the district and make appropriate arrangements.

At least 853 pilgrims will return to the district and 289 have already reached.

"The aim is to stop local transmission. Out of the 15 cases in Sindh, one is through local transmission," said the provincial chief executive.

"It is the responsibility of every citizen to take measure for curbing local transmission."

Murad also asked the relevant authorities to establish quarantine facilities in all districts of the province and ordered a team, made up of officials from Aga Khan Hospital and the World Health Organisation, to reach Sukkur. He further said 475 swabs and 300 testing kits should be sent to the district.
