US government funds allocated apparently to promote business in Afghanistan have landed in Taliban hands under $2.16 billion transportation contract, The Washington Post reported late Sunday.
Citing the results of a year-long military-led investigation, the newspaper said the US and Afghan efforts to address the problem have been slow and all eight of the trucking firms involved remains on the US payroll.
Moreover, the Pentagon extended the contract for six months last March, the report said.
The investigation found “documented, credible evidence … of involvement in a criminal enterprise or support for the enemy” by four of the eight prime contractors, the paper noted.
According to The Post, investigators followed $7.4 million payment to one of the eight companies, which in turn paid a subcontractor, which hired other subcontractors to supply trucks. The trucking subcontractors then made deposits into an Afghan National Police commander’s account, already swollen with payments from other subcontractors, in exchange
for guarantees of safe passage for the convoys, the report said.
Intelligence officials then traced $3.3 million, withdrawn in 27 transactions from the commander’s account, that was transferred to insurgents in the form of weapons, explosives and cash, the paper said.
“This goes beyond our comprehension,” The Post quoted Representative John Tierney as saying.
Democrat Tierney was chairman of a House oversight subcommittee that charged that the military was, in effect, supporting a vast protection racket that paid insurgents and corrupt middlemen to ensure safe passage of the truck convoys that move US military supplies across Afghanistan, the paper said.

Correction: An earlier version of the article was running a headline which implied that the total amount of $2.16 billion ended up in Taliban hands. The correct headline has been added to the story.

American finance Taliban in order to achieve their strategic objectives in the region and create a reason to stay in the region for long term... the instability in the region is in americans interest... thats why are financing the militants in order to keep the weapon selling business well and earn more revenue and eat all the natural resources of the region....
2.16 Billion USD ? Enough to start a war.
worse. It could have fallen in Pakistani hands.
Ok its not important how much money ended up in Taliban hands BUT whats important is that US(INTENTIONALLY OR UNINTENTIONALLY) paid Taliban.
So now lets wait for the americans to blame this on ISI or Pak government.
America has been fueling wars around the world and like a bully blame other people for its failures in these wars.
We should investigate that how much of that money has been used against Pakistan.
America fails again
This answers the question where the terrorists are getting the money and the weapons from to target innocent Pakistani men, women and children in the streets of Pakistan. Terrorism cannot finish unless money channels are dried up. Big money with insurgents is itself an incentive for others to join their ranks.
The so-called illiterate Talebans have totally out-smarted and out-witted the Americans with a 2.5 billion dollars jackpot siphoned off from the US contractors as protection money for safe passage of their military infrastructure. It is ironic that Taleban the sworn enemy, with whom the war is being fought for the past ten years is able to extract through default more money from US than Pakistan who is its closest ally in this war against terrorism.
Just like NICL scam.....................................siphoning off money.
Let us see how US taxpayers money is retrieved.
The headline is misleading, it doesnt say anywhere in the article that $2.16 ended up with the Talian
So now the taliban have a Chief Financial Officer as well who is managing their financial strategy! The americans are doomed!! lol
Don't ET headline-writers know how to read? The original article doesn't say "$2.6 billion funneled to the Taliban" ... that would be a LOT of money. It says the trucking contract is worth $2.6 billion, and some of it (a few million) was funneled to the Taliban.
Sensationalism I can understand, but this is outright incompetence, and it seems to happen quite often.

what a paradox !!!!!!!!! US fighting a war sponsored by its own resources can any one break this news to the US people
