LAHORE: An accountability court in Lahore on Friday sent Mir Shakilur Rahman, the owner of the Jang/Geo Group, on a 12-day physical remand in a land scandal – involving 54 acres – in Johar Town, Lahore.

Rehman, owner of the Jang and Geo group, was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday after he failed to satisfy the investigation team on a 26-pointer questioner over 'illegally' obtaining 54 plots from former prime minister Nawaz Sharif when he was the Punjab chief minister in 1986.

The anti-graft watchdog maintained that it would seek record from the Lahore Development Authority and the Punjab Revenue Department.

NAB also shot down Jang group's statement pegging the arrest as an attempt to suppress the press in the country.

A spokesperson said the bureau "vehemently believed in freedom of expression and would continue its national duty of taking action against the corrupt people without caring about any propaganda, pressure, browbeating and threatening".
