This time, the Kal Ho Naa Ho star has revealed why she decided to ditch her wheelchair and wig after chemotherapy, whilst speaking on Kareena Kapoor-Khan’s radio show. She wanted to embrace her new self.
In a teaser for the episode Bendre shared on Instagram, she can be heard saying, “I had my wig and everything planned. I would put it on. It was so awkward siting in a wheelchair. I said, ‘You know? I don’t want to be in a wheelchair’. I am tired and don’t want it. I said, ‘You know what? Chuck it. This is what it is’.”
The actor also admitted she didn’t want to go to NYC for treatment. “It was my husband who did. And I fought with him throughout the flight. ‘Why are you doing this? We have good doctors here. Why are you taking me away’?”
She continued, “My home, my life in three days, we literally just packed and left and, I don’t know what was happening. I was like, ‘Let’s at least speak to the doctors here’ but he was just quiet and focused. In the day, he was organising and, in the night, as New York was awake, he was organising. Day and night, he was at it.”
Bendre first opened up about her cancer in July 2018. “Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised. Frankly, we did not see it coming,” she wrote then. “A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them.”
