Over 100 women partake in Sea View bike rally

KARACHI: Over 100 women, of 18 years and above, rode motorcycles over a distance of two kilometres from the Village restaurant at Sea View beach, in observance of International Women's Day on Sunday.

Addressing the rally organised under the banner of the Women on Wheels project, an initiative of Salman Sufi Foundation (SSF), SSF head Salman Sufi said, "These motorcycles did not run on roads but ran over the chains that bound women," adding that the bike rally put across the message that women were capable of doing anything they wanted.

"Women can now travel on motorcycles across Pakistan," he said. Sufi said that the rally symbolised women empowerment and was evidence of their confidence.

Sindh Women Development Minister Shehla Raza, who also spoke on the occasion, said that even those women who stayed at home made great sacrifices for their families. She further said, "Our women are very brave and confident and they don't [have to] fear anyone any longer."

"I want to see all these women out in the streets [on motorcycles] from tomorrow onwards," the minister added.
