Scorching heat

It can be hoped that the govt comes up with steps that tackle climate change in a more effective manner

LAHORE: Years ago, February used to be known as one of the cold months of our calendar. Waking up every morning is not the same as it used to be because of the increasing heat in Lahore. First the smog, and now the unbearable scorching day makes one wonder about people working on the streets or out in the open, some of whom include: men constructing roads and muddled up with coal tar, policemen and guards dressed in thick fibre uniforms, and farmers who are busy with their agricultural fields without having a choice of taking a necessary break during the day. The list is not exhaustive.

It is, however, undeniably true that the heat will only increase from here on, until we wait for winters again. This also makes most of us fear the months to come, especially when summers will be hit with load shedding and the lack of monsoon rains in many areas of Pakistan. It can be hoped that the government comes up with steps that tackle climate change in a more effective manner and plants more trees to make our environment clean and green, which will in turn also provide a roof and shelter for people to avoid the intolerable heat. Since the issue of climate change is a global catastrophe, it is important to introduce this in the syllabus so that students are more aware and become active stakeholders from a very young age.
