Classical sarangi tunes enthral residents

The show, titled ‘Saaz Samander’ was held to promote classical music

ISLAMABAD: The beautifully haunting tunes of the traditional musical instruments including the clarinet and the sarangi echoed in the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) Auditorium on Wednesday as two master musicians offered the audience a peek into the mesmerizing world of classical music.

The show, titled ‘Saaz Samander’ (Sea of Musical Instrument) was held at the PNCA on Wednesday evening as part of a programme of the council to promote classical music.

The show featured Ustad Jaffar Hussain Randhawa on the Clarinet and Ustad Zohaib Hussain on Sarangi.

Randhawa is a popular name in the field and has been playing the clarinet for the past four decades. Having started on the instrument at the tender age of seven,

Randhawa learnt the instrument from his uncle Mohammad Sharif. He, however, gained wider recognition after his performance at the All Pakistan Music Conference in 1999.

On Wednesday, he showcased his range by performing thumris of folk and film tunes along with some Sufic tunes.

Sarangi player Hussain ably supported Randhawa during his performances and later performing solo pieces.

“Classical music is our pride and the base for music of all kinds,” said PNCA DirectorGeneral Dr Fauzia Saeed.
