RAWALPINDI: The Punjab Child Protection and Welfare Bureau (CPWB) on Wednesday took custody of a 14-year old rape victim and the baby girl she gave birth to last week.

“If a girl is raped and delivers a baby [conceived as a result of that rape], she is still a child, hence, we have taken her into our custody,” said CPWB Chairperson Sarah Ahmad on Wednesday.

The victim had been sexually assaulted multiple times by two of her neighbours nine months ago, leaving her pregnant. Her step-father learnt of the ordeal when she was six-months pregnant. He then filed a police complaint and the perpetrators were arrested.

The victim, though, gave birth to a baby girl at the Rawalpindi District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) on February 20. CPWB said that the girl’s family tried to put the new-born up for adoption without following the legal procedures and hence the bureau intervened.

CPWB Head Ali Abid approached the court and secured legal custody of the teenaged mother and her new-born daughter.

The victim and her child have been moved to the CPWB shelter in Lahore which has a nursery for babies as well as a shelter home for minor girls and boys.
